Holborn and St Pancras byelection offers Labour hints, not answers

The Conversation, 9 October 2026

The brief

A byelection in Holborn and St Pancras, a central London seat that includes Bloomsbury, the British Museum and three mainline stations, was read as a test for Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Labour's candidate, Sagal Abdi-Wali, leader of Camden Council, won comfortably, with her vote falling by just under four percentage points compared with Keir Starmer's 2024 result. She beat the Green candidate, Zack Polanski.

The Conversation's analyst draws several lessons. Burnham, who comes from the north, seems able to appeal to Londoners. The Greens did not gain enough ground to threaten Labour in big cities, and the small drop in the Liberal Democrat vote may point to some tactical voting. The effect of the Greens' conference vote on Zionism cannot be measured, but divisions persist, and Caroline Lucas has criticised Polanski's silence on the issue.

The author stresses that the contest left the main questions open, such as whether the fragmentation of the two-party system will stop. Still, both Labour and the Conservatives, whose leader Kemi Badenoch had a good conference, currently feel confident in their leaders.

Trump seeks lower fuel prices before the midterms: what can he do?

BBC News, 9 October 2026

The brief

Since the US-Israel war with Iran began in February, American pump prices for gasoline and diesel have risen to more than twice their earlier level, and the cost of living has become a central theme of the midterm campaign. Polls cited by the BBC show a majority of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of the economy and the war.

Trump has tried several measures. He allowed untaxed red dye diesel on highways, but an industry analyst warns of heavy fines for firms once the relief ends, and of pressure on supplies for other users. The G7 announced a release of 100 million barrels from stockpiles, which analysts say has pushed prices down somewhat, though only temporarily, since stocks must later be refilled. Some states, including Ohio and Georgia, have cut gasoline taxes at his urging, while a federal cut would need Congress. A ban on diesel exports could backfire, according to one economist.

Analysts conclude that the president has used the small levers available. Lasting relief depends on ending the conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine, and even then production would take four to six months to recover.

Key vocabulary

midterm elections
élections de mi-mandat

Cop31 host says climate deserves more spending than defence

The Guardian, 9 October 2026

The brief

Murat Kurum, Turkey's climate minister and president-designate of Cop31, told the Guardian that rich countries should spend much more on climate than the 5% of GDP that Nato members have promised for defence. His reasoning is that spending before a disaster costs less than repairing damage afterwards. He spoke at a pre-Cop meeting in Nadi, Fiji, which Australia had wanted held in the Pacific to draw attention to island nations. Only 13 national leaders joined the Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and the majority were from the Pacific.

On fossil fuels, Kurum was more guarded. He said the world is already in a transition and doubted that more progress could be made on the wording. Both host countries, Turkey and Australia, backed a statement supporting a transition away from fossil fuels, yet both face accusations of hypocrisy for supporting new coal and gas projects. They plan to push for a goal of 35% of energy coming from electricity by 2035, up from about 21% now.

A UN report warns that warming will reach at least 1.8C even in a favourable scenario, above the 1.5C Paris limit. Cop31 takes place in Antalya in November.

Key vocabulary

pre-Cop meeting
réunion préparatoire à la Cop

Model sentenceBecause every unit spent before a disaster saves several afterwards, the Cop31 host argues that climate policy should be treated as a security issue like defence.

New York town fights a giant data centre project

The Guardian, 9 October 2026

The brief

East Fishkill, a hamlet of 30,000 people in New York state, once hosted an IBM campus that made semiconductor chips. In 2026 a developer, Treetop Companies, was reported to be exploring a data centre of about one gigawatt. Residents learned of the scale through a filing to the operator of the state's power grid, not through a request to the town.

Opposition grew before any application reached the town. In late June the board unanimously adopted a three-year moratorium on data centres above 20 megawatts. Treetop has appealed, arguing in a letter that the measure unlawfully targets its land and amounts to a permanent ban. Residents cite electricity bills, water, noise, backup generators, wetlands and few lasting jobs, and recall groundwater pollution from the IBM era. They say they are not against technology, but against the size of the project.

Weeks later Governor Kathy Hochul ordered a one-year statewide pause on hyperscale data centres, the first such state measure. Donald Trump called it a terrible decision and later said towns rejecting data centres were backwards. Local organisers say their communities are winning.

Key vocabulary

data centre
centre de données
moratorium
moratoire
power grid
réseau électrique
zoning laws
règles d'urbanisme
backlash
réaction hostile
to appeal
faire appel, contester
groundwater
nappe phréatique
wetlands

executive order
décret (pris par l'exécutif, ici le gouverneur)
hamlet

Model sentenceThe backlash in East Fishkill shows that communities which once welcomed technology now ask whether data centres bring enough local benefit to justify their demand for power and land.

Why opt-out organ donation has not raised donation in England

The Conversation, 9 October 2026

The brief

England switched to opt-out organ donation in 2020: every eligible adult is presumed willing to donate unless they record a refusal. Yet 8,746 people in the UK are waiting for a transplant, and NHS Blood and Transplant issued an urgent appeal this year after donation fell by 9%.

The Conversation's author points to the soft nature of the system, in which families have the final say. Relatives agreed to donation 87% of the time when the person had opted in, but only 46% under deemed consent. Overall, the share of families agreeing dropped from 69% in the 2020-21 period to 59% in 2024-25. A study suggests the key factor is anticipated regret rather than uncertainty. Opt-outs have also risen, from 0.6 million in 2019 to 2.9 million in 2026, which researchers link to a lone-wolf effect, although this is not proven. One study associates opt-out with a 29% fall in living donation, and 7,203 people were waiting for a kidney in 2025-26.

The author recommends that people register their wishes and talk to their families, that health services address objections, and that living donation is not neglected.

Key vocabulary

organ donation
don d'organes
opt-out
régime de refus explicite (consentement présumé sauf opposition)
deemed consent
consentement présumé (légal)
transplant
greffe
waiting list
liste d'attente

théorie du coup de pouce
to opt in
s'inscrire volontairement
living donor
donneur vivant

effets non voulus

Model sentenceAlthough opt-out was meant to ease the shortage of organs, falling family consent suggests that changing the law is not enough to change behaviour.

Sorkin's new film turns to Facebook's algorithm and its whistleblower

NPR, 9 October 2026

The brief

Aaron Sorkin, who wrote The Social Network, has written and directed The Social Reckoning, released in cinemas this week. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, shown as focused on growth with little regard for safety. The film draws partly on Broken Code, the book by journalist Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White. Mikey Madison plays whistleblower Frances Haugen, whose findings emerged in 2021 in the Facebook Files series.

Horwitz found that a 2018 change to the newsfeed algorithm weighted reshares and replies up to 30 times as much as a like. Sorkin argues that this helped content provoking anger to spread, which matters particularly for the 43% of adult users who get their news from the platform. After the scandal, Facebook's parent company became Meta, which said it reduced political content and gave users more control. Meta declined to comment on the film, which NPR describes as biographical fiction.

Sorkin also explains that Jesse Eisenberg, who played Zuckerberg in the first film, declined to return. In the interview he adds that after finishing a project he doubts he will ever write again.

Key vocabulary

whistleblower
lanceur d'alerte
newsfeed
fil d'actualité
algorithm
algorithme
to reshare
repartager
misinformation
désinformation
rage bait
contenu qui provoque la colère
to rebrand
changer d'image de marque

procès
hate speech
discours de haine
to turn down a role
refuser un rôle

Model sentenceBy rewarding reshares, the algorithm favoured content that provokes anger, and Sorkin's film asks whether a platform can pursue growth while ignoring the safety of its users.

The essay: building a three-step argument

CCINP, Mines-Ponts, e3a, ECG

Cette fiche aide à structurer chaque paragraphe de l'essai en trois temps : idée, preuve, analyse.

  1. Start each paragraph with a clear claim in one sentence that answers the question set.
  2. Support the claim with one precise fact, figure or example, named and attributed to its source.
  3. Explain what the evidence shows and why it supports your claim: this is the analysis.
  4. Add a limit or counter-point when it is relevant, then link back to the question.
  5. Use connectors (however, as a result, by contrast) so that the three steps flow naturally.

Example

Claim: laws alone do not change behaviour. Evidence: England adopted opt-out organ donation in 2020, yet family consent fell from 69% to 59% by 2024-25. Analysis: relatives still decide, so a legal default cannot replace conversation within families. This is why policy needs public information too.

Pitfall

Describing without analysing. Wrong: 'Fuel prices more than doubled. Trump allowed red dye diesel.' Right: 'Fuel prices more than doubled, so Trump allowed untaxed red dye diesel on highways, but analysts warn the relief is only temporary.'
